You matched in Houston—and now you need a place to live, fast.
Not just any place. A place that won’t make your already intense schedule harder than it needs to be.
If you’re renting near the Texas Medical Center, the best and most popular areas are Midtown, the Rice/University area, and parts of the Museum District.
Midtown offers the shortest commute and the highest concentration of apartments. The Rice/University area gives you a more polished, quieter lifestyle with still-easy access. The Museum District offers flexibility with a mix of pricing and proximity.
Most residents should prioritize commute first, then lifestyle second—because in Houston, that order matters.
There is one more area to consider and that is NRG area. This part of Houston is connected to TMC with the metro rail line!

NRG Area
NRG used to be called "Reliant Park" so if you look at the map of the red line, you can see reliant Park at the very bottom right where 288 meets 610.
Personally, I call this area, "Condo Land" because there are so many condominium complexes! You'll find a mix of people that live here and many of them live there for proximity to the rail so that means they are medical professionals that are only three or four stops away from where they work, college students who are close to university of Houston and other close by universities, and anyone who wants to be close to Houston's public transit.
Not paying for parking in the medical center is a huge perk to riding the rail!
This is a great area if you plan on having a roommate because many units are set up for roommates with private en suite baths, and communal living spaces. This is not corporate housing, this is renting a unit from a landlord, sometimes a property manager.
As a bonus, you will be right next to energy stadium, giving you immediate access to Texans games, concerts, and of course, the famous Houston Rodeo!
Of course, it will feel like living in an apartment or a campus--that's how condos are. :)
For renting a house, duplex, or garage apartment, you definitely want to look at Montrose, Midtown, Rice area, and parts of the Heights & Northside!
Midtown (Most Convenient Option)
5–10 minute commute to TMC
High density of apartments
Easy access to bars, restaurants, gyms
Feels young, social, and active
Rent Range:~$1,500–$2,400 depending on building and amenities
Reality check:It’s not quiet. It’s not charming. It’s convenient—and that’s why it works.
Rice / University Area (Best Overall Living Experience)
5–10 minute commute
Close to Rice Village (restaurants, coffee, walkability pockets)
More greenery, more calm
Rent Range:~$1,800–$3,000+ depending on building and proximity
Why people end up here:You want your home to feel like a reset, not just a crash pad.
Museum District (Underrated Middle Ground)
5–15 minute commute
Mix of apartments, condos, and smaller buildings
Less predictable—varies by street
Rent Range:~$1,400–$2,500
Best for: Immediately proximal to TMC
Montrose (Lifestyle-Driven Choice) (also my favorite)
10–20 minute commute
Walkable pockets, strong personality
Eclectic mix of buildings
Rent Range:~$1,500–$2,700
Tradeoff:More character, slightly less convenience than Midtown.
What Actually Matters When Renting in Houston
1. Commute (Again… Yes, Again)
A 20-minute difference in Houston traffic is not minor. It’s your sleep. Your stress. Your sanity.
2. Parking
Non-negotiable.
Even if you think, “I’ll be at the hospital all the time anyway”—you still need easy, secure parking where you live.
3. Building Type
Large Apartment Complex/Condo:
Easier, predictable, amenity-heavy
Less character
Smaller Building / Duplex or Garage Apartment:
More charm
More variability (management, maintenance, etc.)
4. Daily Life Convenience
Ask yourself:
How fast can I get groceries?
Is there coffee within 5 minutes?
Can I get food quickly after a long shift?
Houston is a driving city—but convenience still matters a lot.
